We’ve spent four class weeks with the Junior Leaders at YMCA Carrick and now our time has come to an end.
It’s been a challenging time as we have looked at the realities of how we can actually create change in our own communities – sometimes the issues seem so big for us to tackle. But we’ve learnt that when we come together and make space for conversations about change that possibilities start to appear.
One aspect we talked about was how we are the community but when doing projects like this we can easily slip into acting as we are doing kind things for the community, creating a divide and unintentionally but nevertheless falsely, elevating ourselves above others. We were humbled as we listened to each other’s experiences of growing up in Carrickfergus with some people experiencing particular difficulties. We decided as a group that our project would be to support other people in our community experiencing similar difficulties and also appreciate the organisation locally who offers continual support for our community.
The group worked together thinking and planning but most of all being open about what life can really be like. Those conversations can feel overwhelming but when we really listened, we found the idea that became our social action project.
Thanks to everyone involved and we have no doubt that this group will continue giving to their community now that are confident in their ability to contribute.
